QUESTIONS ASKED ON THE 1891 CENSUS

(THE NAMES OF ALL FAMILY MEMBERS ARE LISTED)

Personal Census (Schedule No.1)

1891 - INTRODUCTION

With thanks to Hugh Armstrong, who gathered the information as to what questions were asked on every Canadian census. Hugh's website was an invaluable resource, but Hugh, and his site are long gone from the Internet. So that Hugh's hard work would not be lost, I saved the pages and placed them online on AllCensusRecords.com. Enjoy! And remember to silently thank Hugh for his hard work.

This census, like the 1881 census, is also quite limited and many pages are difficult or impossible to read. However the questions regarding the birth place of the parents can by a useful tool. For example if there had been more than one wife and they were born in different locations it could be used to determine who were the mothers of the various children.

There is an interesting section to this census that is often overlooked. On microfilm number T-6427 institutions are listed. These seem to be provincial institutions and people are listed as blind, insane or residents of houses of providence (usually young women). There are only 1 to 4 pages per county and a very limited amount of information is given but it does list name, age and marriage status.

The microfilming of this census was a bit haphazard at and frequently pages are on the film out of order. eg. If your family at the bottom of page 23 and you are expecting more people to be listed and they are not on the next page - make sure the next page is 24 - the pages may have been filmed in the following order: 22, 23, 26, 27, 24, 25.
